About this test
Beta hCG is the pregnancy hormone. The quantitative blood test detects it several days earlier than a urine test and returns an actual level rather than a yes or no. Because a healthy early pregnancy roughly doubles the level every 48 hours, repeating the test is a useful way to check that a pregnancy is progressing.
