About this test
D-dimer is a fragment released as clot breaks down. Its strength is a negative result, which in a low-risk patient largely excludes deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. A positive is far less specific — infection, surgery, pregnancy and age all raise it — and needs imaging. Suspected clot is urgent, so this belongs at the centre.
