About this test
A Lipid Profile measures the fats circulating in your blood. LDL cholesterol builds up in artery walls, HDL cholesterol carries it away, and triglycerides rise with diet, alcohol and uncontrolled diabetes. Together with your age, blood pressure and smoking status, these numbers are what a doctor uses to decide whether you need treatment. Fasting for 9–12 hours gives the most reliable triglyceride reading.
What it measures
- Total cholesterol
- LDL cholesterol — the one to keep low
- HDL cholesterol — the one to keep high
- Triglycerides
- Total cholesterol to HDL ratio
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
