About this test
An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, to look at the solid organs of the abdomen and pelvis. It is the first-line scan for abdominal pain, suspected gallstones, and abnormal liver or kidney blood tests. Fasting reduces bowel gas and lets the gallbladder fill, both of which make the images clearer.
