About this test
Anti-TPO antibodies attack the enzyme the thyroid uses to make its hormones. They are the marker of Hashimoto's thyroiditis, the commonest cause of an underactive thyroid, and their presence changes the outlook: an abnormal TSH with antibodies is likely to be permanent, without them it may not be.
What it measures
- Thyroid peroxidase antibody concentration
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
