About cardiac

Heart testing answers three separate questions and they need three different studies. An ECG shows the electrical signal driving each beat. An echocardiogram shows the mechanics — the chambers, the valves, and how much blood is ejected with each contraction. An exercise tolerance test shows what happens when the heart is asked to work hard, which is when some problems first appear.

The fourth question is what happens when nobody is watching. A single ECG lasts ten seconds and misses anything intermittent, and a blood pressure reading taken in a clinic is often higher than your true average. Twenty-four hour Holter and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring record continuously while you go about a normal day and sleep a normal night.

Chest pain is the one symptom not to wait on. We are open around the clock, and an ECG takes five minutes.

When your doctor sends you here

  • Chest pain, tightness or pressure — do not wait on this one
  • Palpitations, a racing heart, or a pulse that feels irregular
  • Breathlessness on stairs or exertion that is new for you
  • Blackouts, dizziness or unexplained fainting
  • High blood pressure that needs confirming or monitoring
  • A pre-operative or executive check-up

How to prepare

  • An ECG needs no preparation at all. Nothing passes into you — the electrodes only listen.
  • For an exercise tolerance test, wear shoes you can walk briskly in and avoid a heavy meal beforehand.
  • Ask your doctor whether to hold any heart medication on the morning of a stress test. Do not stop it on your own.
  • Holter and blood pressure monitors are worn home and returned the next day. Keep a short note of anything you feel and when.

Common questions

What is the difference between an ECG and an echo?

An ECG records the heart's electrical activity and takes about five minutes. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart and shows the structure moving — valves, chamber size and pumping function. They answer different questions and are often ordered together.

Why would I need a 24-hour monitor?

Because the thing you are describing may not happen during a ten-second tracing. If your symptoms come and go, a monitor worn for a full day and night is the only way to catch the episode while it is happening.

Is an exercise tolerance test safe?

It is done under supervision with the ECG and blood pressure recorded continuously, and it is stopped the moment anything changes or you ask to stop. Tell the technologist about any joint or breathing problem that would limit you before you start.
