About this test
The direct test looks for antibody already coating the red cells, which is what causes autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and haemolytic disease of the newborn. The indirect test looks for antibody free in the plasma, and is the basis of antenatal antibody screening and of cross-matching before transfusion.
