About this test
HBsAg is a protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus. A positive result means the virus is currently present. Hepatitis B often causes no symptoms for years while quietly damaging the liver, which is why screening matters before surgery, during pregnancy, and for anyone with a household contact who is positive.
