About this test
A Liver Function Test measures enzymes and proteins that indicate whether liver cells are inflamed, whether bile is draining properly, and whether the liver is still producing what the body needs. It is used to investigate jaundice, abdominal pain and fatigue, to monitor hepatitis, and to check that long-term medication is not affecting the liver.
What it measures
- ALT and AST — enzymes released when liver cells are damaged
- Alkaline phosphatase and GGT — raised when bile flow is obstructed
- Total and direct bilirubin — the pigment behind jaundice
- Albumin and total protein — what the liver is producing
A note on results. A single test is one part of a clinical picture, not a diagnosis. Discuss your report with a qualified doctor, who will read it alongside your history and examination.
