About this test
PSA is a protein made by the prostate. Levels rise with prostate cancer, but also with benign enlargement, infection, recent cycling and recent ejaculation — so a raised result needs interpreting in context rather than panicking over. It is usually discussed with a doctor before testing, since the decision to screen is a personal one.
